On Friday, a great meteor flared through the skies over Russia Chelyabinsk region, producing an atomic bomb.
According to the US space agency NASA, the meteor of 17 meters, which left more than a thousand injured people in the Russian province of Chelyabinsk (Urals) on Friday, released 500 kilotons of energy , about thirty times the energy of Hiroshima atomic bomb.
“An event of this magnitude occurs once in 100 years,” Paul Chodas, collaborator at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory of NASA, said. “When a fireball is that size, many meteorites can reach the surface.”
In fact, experts of the Russian Department of Emergencies are still looking for fragments of the meteor. According to one hypothesis, they would have fallen into the lake Chebarkul, near Chelyabinsk.
According to the latest news, the fireball burst windows and caused other damages to more than 3,700 residential buildings and 700 public facilities. The total area of broken glasses reaches 200,000 square meters.
The Russian Department of Emergencies estimates that the injured people reach 1,145, mostly of minor injuries, although 50 people have required hospitalization, including a 52 year old woman, who has two broken vertebrae. She was transferred on Saturday in a special plane to Moscow.
Russian meteor. Lots of videos and visual documents on the web:
Chelyabinsk is a town of 1.1 million in western Siberia, a really cold place. Multiple amateur videos posted online showed the meteor flaring arc stretching hundreds of miles across the sky. Other videos from the scene captured the sound of a loud boom, followed by a cacophony of car alarms and shouts. Another video showed the quick evacuation of an office building in Chelyabinsk and the fear of people. A terrible moment!
